NZ YouTube @ the Melbourne Gathering!

This past week the ‘Expload’ YouTube event was planned – It was to involve performances by musicians, meet & greets with well-known YouTubers and more! Unfortunately the event had to be postponed, but is being rescheduled for some time later in the year. In its place there was an old-school YouTube gathering, where YouTubers from all over Australia met up in Melbourne’s Federation Square to hang out, film & take selfies!

The gathering had YouTubers travel from all over Australia to attend, and even a few New Zealanders were in attendance! Katie (ThatKatieProject), Jase (TheFaceofJ), Jody (galaxydreaming) and myself (TheRyanLamont) all had a great time at the gathering, mingling with the Australian YouTube community. We all noted how large the event was, especially in comparison to New Zealand’s YouTube gatherings. At least a few hundred people came to this event, mainly due to the presence of British YouTuber FunForLouis

Katie & Jody lined up to meet Louis, and each had a little conversation with him. It’s great being able to speak to YouTubers such as Louis, since they can really give you some good advice for your own YouTube journey. I know I personally learnt a lot from the Australian YouTubers I spoke with on the day. The event was a great chance to converse with fellow YouTubers, plan some collabs, finally meet friends formed on YouTube and meet new creators on the day too.

Be sure to check out Jody, Katie and I’s videos from the day, so you can live vicariously through our experiences, and perhaps when Expload gets a new date we’ll see more New Zealand YouTubers heading to Aussie.

Relive the #NZYTgathering

It’s been a month since Auckland’s NZYT Gathering, organised by Tenani (Nanisnap) and attended by over 50 people, so I thought it’d be great to take a look back and watch some of the videos from the event. There’s a whole bunch here, have you seen them all?

It’s so cool to see how each person took away something different from the even. There’s a nice variety of daily vlog-styled videos mixed with some more ‘artsy’ depictions of the day, and some encompass the weekend as a whole! Hope you enjoy watching these videos and reminiscing about the #NZYTgathering – The next gathering should be happening in the second half of the year, so stay tuned to the Facebook Page and Twitter for more info as it comes.

Auckland Gathering In Review

On January 19th Tenani (Nanisnap) organised Auckland’s first gathering since 2010! The gathering was focused around community-bonding, with the day’s schedule left clear for optimal interaction. It was held at the ASB Cube Theatre, with about 50-60 people attending the event, both creators and viewers.

On the day we had a few YouTube goodies to giveaway to lucky YouTubers, including T-shirts, jackets and notepads! If you got one of these snazzy items it’d be great to see some pictures of you with  your YouTube gear [Tweet us]!

Also, the lovely Janne (InsanelyJanne) made some brilliant New Zealand YouTube-themed cookies, which were quickly Instagrammed and devoured by the delighted YouTubers. Thanks for making those Janne, they were such a fun treat! Be sure to check out Janne’s channel, she’s just begun her YouTube adventure so let’s show her some support!

We had another surprise too! TV3 News turned up to cover the event. Some YouTubers were interviewed about their experience on Youtube and then the camera roamed the crowds to get some shots of the gathering. Both Britney (britneyofLAH) and Katie (ThatKatieProject) made the cut and were aired on TV3 News that night, intercut with images from JacksGap’s Rickshaw Run Series and a NZ-based web series. Although the story completely missed the point of the gathering, and instead focused on the typical ‘making money on YouTube’ story, it got a lot of people excited – There was even a group of New Zealand YouTubers huddled in a hotel room eagerly awaiting the news report. You can watch the story here, just ignore the misleading title.

NZYT Gathering

Then, thanks to the nifty balcony, we took a great group shot of the attendees – Look at all those excited New Zealand YouTubers! You can clearly see in this image that this gathering was double the size of last year’s Wellington Meet Up. It’s great to see more people getting involved in the YouTube scene, both as creators and viewers.

Now that the gathering is over we look towards planning the next gathering and making it bigger and better. As always, it will most likely be based on the North Island in either Wellington or Auckland, and won’t be until the end of 2014 or early 2015. But if you haven’t gotten enough of meeting YouTubers, then maybe check out events held in Australia and the US!

Hope you had a great time at the NZYT Gathering!

Over 80 New Zealand YouTubers are expected to descend on the ASB North Wharf to attend the New Zealand YouTube gathering. The event has been organsied by veteran YouTuber Tenani, and will be the first NZ YouTube gathering in Auckland in over 2 years!

For live updates on the gathering be sure to check the #NZYT and #NZYTgathering hashtag on Twitter, also keep an eye on @Tenani and @RyanLamont‘s Twitter feeds, who I am sure will be live-tweeting the event. Expect a review on the gathering to appear on the site in the coming days!
